i didn’t have to try very hard to find (or create) meaning in my day today because i am truly blessed. and what a wonderful realization that is.
today, my day wasn’t meaningful because of something i did…. it was full of meaning because of all of the things my friends do, for me. with full time jobs, children, school, personal projects, and life in general, it can be hard to find time to go to lunch or spend time together. but i am lucky.
you see, my friends are amazing (yours probably are too) because they are creative.
they somehow manage to find a way to brighten my world and better my day without having to be physically present. and because many of my friends are scattered across multiple states, we have discovered ways to be together while living far apart. i see friendship in the random facebook posts that pop up on my wall, in the invites to play games on my phone. i have extraordinary friends that will surprise pick up at work and bring me my favorite drink, and friends that will send me a postcard and piece of jewelry from every place they travel because they know that is what i love. i have friends that would collect leaves from campus for me in michigan and bring them to class…and since i am not in michigan anymore, that same friend will send me good morning texts about the weather and song suggestions to start my day off right.
words cannot begin to describe the gratitude i feel in my heart. i go to bed laughing about the day’s silly texts and inside jokes. and on any given day, i wake up to a text reminding me to be productive, letting me know that i am missed, or wishing me a wonderful day. especially on days like today, my friends motivate me, inspire me, and lighten my load.
while i did see friends from class, i didn’t get to spend time with any of my extra-close friends today. instead, i got a “i miss you” text, and reminders to look on the bright side of things. i had friends go out of their way to ask how my internship was going, to tell me that they were reading this blog. to let me know they were thinking of me.
and i couldn’t ever possibly ask for more than that.
if you are lucky, you have friends to call when you need something, and friends to call even when you don’t. you have friends that go out of their way just to do something kind and friends who will tell you when you are wrong. the people you hang out influence your decisions, beliefs, and attitude. if you surround yourself with complainers, its hard not to complain. on the other hand, if you want to have some positive in your life, then surround yourself with goodness. do good, be good, say good. act like the person you hope to be. and surround yourself with people who want to help you get there.
because what i have found is that if you surround yourself with people that make you want to be a better person, you can’t help but rise to the challenge.
today was meaningful because i realized that i am a better person
because of my friends.
its time to appreciate what you have, right there, in front of your eyes.
